The Greatest Gift | Deep Dive Week 2 “Pax Semper”
A Peace That Transcends
As we continue our journey through “The Greatest Gift” Advent series, we find ourselves at the doorstep of a profound and often elusive concept: peace. In a world where conflict and chaos seem to reign, the idea of true peace can feel like a distant dream. Yet, as we delve into the Scriptures, we discover that the gift of peace is not something that can be manufactured or imposed, but rather something that can only be received and nurtured within the human heart.
In Luke 1:28-36, we read the account of the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary, where he announces the miraculous birth of Jesus. Amidst the shock and uncertainty, the angel’s words bring a sense of calm and reassurance: “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God” (Luke 1:30). This encounter sets the stage for the arrival of the Prince of Peace, who would bring a peace that transcends the turmoil of the world.
In John 14:27, Jesus himself says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Here, Jesus distinguishes between the fleeting peace offered by the world and the lasting peace that only he can provide. This peace is not something that can be achieved through human effort or external circumstances, but rather it is a gift that can only be accepted and experienced within the depths of our hearts.
The gift of true peace can’t be opened with pen and paper, rule of law, or by force. It can’t be imposed by governments or institutions. It can only be accepted within the human heart, where the love and presence of God reside. This is the peace that Jesus offers, a peace that is not dependent on external circumstances, but rather on the internal transformation that occurs when we surrender to his love and presence.
As we reflect on the gift of peace this Advent season, we are reminded that it is not something that we can manufacture or control. Rather, it is a gift that we can only receive and nurture within our hearts. May we be open to receiving this gift, and may it bring us a sense of calm and reassurance in the midst of life’s challenges.
