I Believe | Deep Dive Week 3 “Jesus Christ Eternal”
The Timeless Truth of the Creeds: Understanding Jesus Through John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. – John 1:1-5
The opening verses of the Gospel of John are a profound declaration of who Jesus is. They remind us that Jesus is not just a historical figure, but the eternal Word of God, the source of all life and light. This foundational truth is at the heart of the Christian faith and is beautifully encapsulated in the Apostles’ Creed.
Pastor Brad, in his Week 3 sermon, emphasized the importance of the Creeds in providing a simple and clear understanding of who Jesus is and what it means to be a Christian. The Creeds are timeless because they distill the essence of our faith into statements that can be easily understood and passed down through generations.
The Apostles’ Creed, in particular, serves as a concise summary of the core beliefs of Christianity. It begins with the affirmation of belief in God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. It then moves to the central figure of our faith, Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. The Creed goes on to recount the key events of Jesus’s life, death, resurrection, and ascension, highlighting His divine nature and redemptive work.
In John 1:1-5, we see the eternal nature of Jesus, the Word who was with God and was God from the beginning. This passage underscores the truth that Jesus is not a created being, but the Creator Himself. Through Him, all things were made, and in Him is the life that is the light of all mankind. This light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The Creeds remind us that every generation must have a simple and clear understanding of who Jesus is. They provide a framework for teaching and passing on the faith, ensuring that the essential truths of Christianity are preserved and proclaimed. In a world that is constantly changing, the Creeds offer a steadfast anchor, grounding us in the unchanging truth of God’s Word.
As we reflect on John 1:1-5 and the Apostles’ Creed, let us be reminded of the timeless truth of who Jesus is. He is the eternal Word, the source of all life and light, and the Savior of the world. May we hold fast to these truths and pass them on to the next generation, so that they too may know and believe in the One who is the light of all mankind.
